Reef-Safe

Not every light that pleases the eye is necessarily good for your corals, which is why the ReefBeat App checks your light settings and ensures that you have not exceeded the recommended daily exposure.

This is the Sun’s visible light spectrum

Corals cannot utilize the full sun spectrum. Light above 480 nm (greens, yellows, reds) can potentially harm the corals as it generates excess heat, promote toxic oxygen radicals, and damages the symbiotic Zooxanthellae algae.

ReefLED is 100% safe for corals

It is uniquely designed with light intensity and spectrum that are 100% utilized by corals, using the optimal spectrum for coral growth and color expression between 380 to 480 nm.

Whiter light (lower Kelvin) has a higher brightness/watt than bluer light (higher Kelvin).
ReefSpec Blue light is 100% PUR (100% usable by the corals), 8,000K White light is approximately 45% PUR (55% not usable by the corals).
Corals can only tolerate 5 hours per day of 8,000K @ 100% intensity and 12 hours per day of 15,000K and above @ 100% intensity.

Happy Shiny Corals

The ReefLED’s signature REEF-SPEC blue is augmented with more violet and UV, and boosted to 470nm at the high end of the PUR spectrum, making your corals positively pop, whatever their natural color.

PAR vs. PUR

Optimal PAR Distribution

The ReefLED G2 provides ideal PAR values throughout the aquarium, without hotspots or areas with insufficient light for coral growth.

PAR vs. PUR

Using strictly PAR measurements to determine the light quality or compatibility of a specific light unit for coral photobiology can be misleading.

The PAR measurement was developed to measure the Photosynthetic Active Radiation of plants that is within the visible light region (400 -700 nm).

The Photosynthetic Utilized Radiation or PUR that is relevant for optimal Zooxanthellae photosynthesis is between 380- 480 nm which starts outside the range of visible light (measured by PAR meters) in the UV region and continues into the blue part of the visible light range.

PUR cannot be measured directly but must be calculated by isolating the PUR wavelength intensity data for each wavelength from radio-spectrometer analysis.

The REEF-SPEC Blue channel of the ReefLED is 100% PUR so for this channel the PUR will actually be slightly higher than the measured PAR due to the UV wavelengths that the PAR meter cannot detect.

The 8000K White of the ReefLED has a strong blue peak in the PUR spectrum as well as wavelengths across the whole visible light spectrum and therefore has a PUR of 45% of its PAR.

The actual PUR output of the ReefLED will vary according to the combined settings of the Reef-Spec Blue and White channels.
