Red Sea Probe Cleaning Solution

About this product

Red Sea Probe Cleaning Solution (R35855) is a weak-acid solution for cleaning the pH and ORP probes used on a reef aquarium. With use, salt, organic film and mineral deposits build up on a probe’s sensing element and make its readings slow and inaccurate. This solution removes the mineral and scale deposits so your probe reads reliably again and reaches its full service life.

It is suitable for use with the ReefSense pH, ORP, Salinity and Temperature probes, and with other reef-aquarium pH and ORP probes. Always dilute the solution 1:10 with RO water before use.

Important:

Do not use this solution on probes or sensors with titanium electrodes – the acid can oxidize the titanium and affect how the sensor works. In particular, do not use it on Red Sea’s ATO, ReefMat or ReefRun sensors.

What you’ll need

• Red Sea Probe Cleaning Solution (R35855)
• RO water, for diluting and rinsing
• Plain (unscented) household bleach, to remove organic fouling first
• KCl probe storage solution if you have it, or freshly mixed seawater
• Two small, clean containers to hold the soak solutions

It’s usually easiest to clean a probe at a sink, away from the aquarium.

Cleaning your probe

Treat the sensing element gently. Never wipe, rub or touch the glass membrane (pH probe) or the sensing tip (ORP probe). Rubbing scratches the surface and builds up a static charge, both of which make readings slow and unstable. Clean by rinsing and soaking only, and blot dry against the outside of the probe body – never the sensing element.

Routine cleaning. Each time you calibrate or validate the probe, and whenever readings begin to look sluggish or drift, rinse the tip under RO water to wash off salt and loose film.

Removing stubborn fouling. If organic film or mineral deposits have built up, clean the probe in two stages, rinsing well with RO water between and after each stage:
1. Remove organics first with a diluted, plain (unscented) household bleach solution – 1 part bleach to 10 parts RO water. Soak the tip for 2-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with RO water.
2. Then remove mineral deposits with Red Sea Probe Cleaning Solution, diluted 1:10 with RO water. Soak for 2-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with RO water.

WARNING:

Never allow bleach and the cleaning solution to mix – combining them releases toxic chlorine gas. Rinse the probe thoroughly with RO water between the two stages, never soak it in both at once, and handle household bleach with care.

Rehydrate. After cleaning, rehydrate the sensing element for at least 30 minutes – in KCl probe storage solution if you have it, or in freshly mixed seawater if not.

Recalibrate or re-validate. Once the probe has rehydrated, recalibrate a pH probe, or re-validate an ORP probe, before relying on the readings. A freshly cleaned ORP probe may take a little while to settle before its reading is fully stable.
