Why are hobbyists so successful
with our salts?

The answer lies in a combination of a rich natural ingredient, scientific innovation based on three decades of research, uncompromising responsibility. In addition, with higher dissolvability of our new & improved formula it only takes about 20 minutes from bucket to tank, which makes your mixing routine far more convenient.

The salt’s origin

Our salt comes from the Red Sea, a protected inlet of the Indian Ocean lying between East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. This is one of the most barren regions on earth, but beneath the blue waters is an unusual oasis of living creatures, reefs, and coral formations.

Our premium salts are made with a unique form of sodium chloride that is harvested from the living coral reef itself – resulting in an unparalleled homogeneity of trace elements in every single grain.

Strict ICP quality control

Thanks to our long-term ongoing research on the needs of corals in artificial enviroments, we have discovered that the levels of some of the elements in natural seawater are simply not high enough to maintain a stable artificial reef environment.

This is mainly because aquariums lack the vast replenishing resources of the ocean, thereby requiring an elemental boost on our end.

Furthermore, our research has shown that only a very specific ratio between the foundation elements will provide sustained growth and a healthy aragonitic coral skeleton. We, therefore, formulate both our salts in accordance to these ratios, with balanced and elevated levels of the foundation elements.

Our strict ICP quality control procedure applied to every single batch, adding the final touch and guaranteeing homogeneity and continuity from one salt mix to the next.

Which Salt is best for your tank?

Moderate Alkalinity, Premium grade

Red Sea Salt

Contains moderately elevated and balanced levels of the foundation elements (Calcium, Magnesium, Bicarbonates) necessary for sustainable coral growth.

When combined with our reef care recipes, it will maximize pigment saturation to bring out your coral’s most vivid colors, while encouraging growth up to twice the natural rate. Red Sea Salt’s Alkalinity of 8 dKH is ideal for all reef aquarium types, and especially SPS dominated tanks.

Complementary Supplements

Red Sea’s research has identified 36 Major, Minor and Trace elements that are regularly depleted from the aquarium water and have an active role in coral growth and coloration, as well as other biological activities of the reef environment. The Reef Care program perfectly compliments Red Sea’s salts by providing the supplements necessary for maintaining these elements at the optimal levels for your reef system.

How he harvest
our salts

Corals need to invest energy in transporting the elements necessary for skeletal growth from the surrounding water through their soft tissue.

Elevated levels of the foundation elements create a more positive ionic gradient, making this process much more efficient (less energy required per gram of skeleton). Therefore balanced, elevated levels of the foundation elements will result in accelerated coral growth rates.

In low levels of Mg²+ and/or Sr²+ coral skeleton will develop with a higher proportion of calcite, making it more brittle and more susceptible to damage, as low magnesium or high calcium levels may lead to Alkalinity drops. High Alkalinity with calcium at saturation levels will cause precipitation, leading to low calcium levels.

The pristine water of the Red Sea is transferred through a unique solar evaporation process. During the process, the seawater salinity increases from 40 ppt to approx. 250 ppt and the sodium chloride crystals start to precipitate, harboring a specific amount of trace elements. During the final stage of the evaporation process, the sodium chloride is washed and dried, removing all remaining organic and inorganic impurities.

The result is immaculate white crystals of sodium chloride, comprising 45 of the elements naturally present in the Red Sea water.

This element-enriched sodium chloride, makes up over 72% of the contents of Red Sea Salts, delivering a level of homogeneity that is nearly impossible to match through artificial means.
