ReefSense Leak Detector

Introduction

The ReefSense Leak Detector gives you early warning of a leak. It reliably detects spilled water – anything from RO water to saltwater – and lets your ReefControl Pro/Lite alert you and, if you choose, switch off equipment to limit the damage. It connects through the ReefSense port like any other ReefSense Sensor, and you can add several detectors to one ReefControl Pro/Lite for wider coverage around your system.

This manual assumes you already have a ReefControl Pro/Lite set up and running in the ReefBeat App. If you don’t, set that up first using its own manual, then come back here to add the Leak Detector.

What’s in the box

• ReefSense Leak Detector – R35824

Installation and placement

The Leak Detector works by sensing water that bridges the two titanium pins on its underside, so where you put it matters: stand it upright with the pins pointing down, at the lowest point where water would collect first if something leaked – for example on the cabinet floor beneath the sump, near pipework, or by the top-off reservoir. Keep it away from spots that get normal splashes, condensation or salt creep, which could trigger it when there’s no real leak.

1. Connect the Leak Detector to the ReefSense port connector cable, with the securing nut fully closed.
2. Stand the detector upright at the chosen spot, with its titanium pins facing down, and route its cable so it isn’t a trip hazard or sitting in a place water would pool only because of the cable.
3. For wider coverage, add more detectors – for example one under the sump and one by the reservoir.

Adding the Leak Detector in the ReefBeat App

1. Open your ReefControl Pro/Lite in the ReefBeat App, choose Setup Probe, and select Leak Detector.
2. Confirm the detector the app has found, then continue. If a firmware update is available, let it run (see Firmware updates).
3. Give it a name, or keep the default.

Note:

Add detectors one at a time, finishing each in the app before connecting the next, so the app sets up the right one. If you use more than one, they are grouped together and share the same settings.

What happens when a leak is detected

When the Leak Detector senses water, your ReefControl Pro/Lite responds straight away:
Notification – the app sends you an alert straight away, so you can act even when you’re away from the tank.
Audible alarm – the ReefControl Pro/Lite’s audible alarm is enabled. The leak alarm has a distinct sound from the parameter alarm, so you can tell them apart. A short press of the ReefControl Pro/Lite’s Manual Control button silences it.
Emergency shutdown – a detected leak triggers your Emergency Quick Action, switching off the aquarium equipment you’ve assigned to it – such as the sockets on a paired ReefControl Power – to help stop further spillage. You choose which equipment the action covers when you set it up in the ReefBeat App (see the ReefControl Power manual for sockets on a paired ReefControl Power).
ATO pump shut-off – if a ReefControl ATO Module is installed on the same ReefControl Pro/Lite, a detected leak automatically switches off the ATO pump port for as long as the leak is present, so the top-off can’t keep adding water during a spill. The pump returns to normal Auto-Fill once the detector reads “clear”.

Once you’ve found and dealt with the leak, dry the detector thoroughly before it will read “clear” again.

Settings

In the detector’s settings you can turn each response on or off:
Leak detection – on by default; turn it off only if you need to disable the detector temporarily.
Audible alarm – on by default; the ReefControl Pro/Lite’s audible alarm is enabled on a leak.
Emergency shutdown – on by default; a leak triggers your Emergency Quick Action to switch off the equipment you’ve assigned to it.

Firmware updates

From time to time the ReefBeat App will let you know that a firmware update is available for your Leak Detector. Keeping the firmware up to date ensures it stays compatible with the app. Firmware updates are performed via Bluetooth (ensure Bluetooth is enabled in your phone’s settings). When you run an update, keep your phone within approximately 3 m (10′) of the detector and leave the app open during the update.

Maintenance

The Leak Detector needs very little care, but it reads most reliably when its contacts are kept clean and dry.
• Wipe the underside contacts occasionally to remove dust, dampness or salt build-up – dried salt can leave a conductive film that causes a false alarm.
• After a leak has been cleaned up, dry the detector thoroughly so it stops alarming and is ready to detect the next event.
• If you need to take it out of use for a while, you can turn Leak detection off in its settings, and turn it back on afterwards.
