Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments constituent la base de l&rsquo;environnement r\u00e9cifal et comprennent les trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments principaux : Le Calcium (Ca), le Magn\u00e9sium (Mg) et les Bi-Carbonates (HCO<sub>3<\/sub>). Ces trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments ont un effet majeur sur la chimie de l&rsquo;eau (stabilit\u00e9 du pH, Alcalinit\u00e9, force ionique de l&rsquo;eau de mer) et sur de nombreux processus biologiques des coraux (formation du squelette, \u00e9change d&rsquo;ions, photosynth\u00e8se).<br><br>Les \u00e9l\u00e9ments mineurs et les oligo-\u00e9l\u00e9ments pr\u00e9sents dans le squelette et les tissus mous de tous les coraux sont connus pour \u00eatre des biocatalyseurs importants dans les milliers de processus m\u00e9taboliques des organismes marins et pour avoir un lien direct avec les pigments sp\u00e9cifiques des coraux. Tous ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments doivent \u00eatre facilement disponibles dans tous les aquariums r\u00e9cifaux. Toutefois, nombre d&rsquo;entre eux deviennent toxiques \u00e0 des concentrations sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles que l&rsquo;on trouve dans l&rsquo;eau de mer naturelle et leur dosage correct est donc crucial pour la r\u00e9ussite \u00e0 long terme de tout aquarium r\u00e9cifal.<br><br>La croissance corallienne (squelettogen\u00e8se) est le processus par lequel les coraux pr\u00e9cipitent les El\u00e9ments Fondamentaux ainsi que le Strontium et le Baryum de l&rsquo;eau environnante pour former les \u00e9l\u00e9ments constituant le squelette corallien. Les coraux construisent environ 97 % de leur squelette en combinant les ions Ca et CO<sub>3<\/sub> de l&rsquo;eau pour former l&rsquo;aragonite (CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>). Le reste du squelette est constitu\u00e9 d&rsquo;autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments mineurs et d&rsquo;oligo-\u00e9l\u00e9ments.<br><br>Dans des conditions d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibr\u00e9es, telles que de faibles niveaux de Magn\u00e9sium et de Strontium, le squelette se d\u00e9veloppera avec une proportion plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e de calcite, ce qui le rendra plus fragile et plus susceptible d&rsquo;\u00eatre endommag\u00e9. Les El\u00e9ments Fondamentaux se compl\u00e8tent dans la formation du squelette corallien et, s&rsquo;ils ne sont pas disponibles dans les proportions correctes, l&rsquo;un d&rsquo;entre eux deviendra rapidement le facteur limitant d&rsquo;une croissance corallienne saine.<br><br>Les coraux exhibent leurs couleurs \u00e9clatantes gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la production de pigments (chromoprot\u00e9ines) qui prot\u00e8gent les couches internes d\u00e9licates du tissu mou du corail contre les rayons UV intenses, comme le bronzage de la peau humaine lorsqu&rsquo;elle est expos\u00e9e \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re directe du soleil. Les pigments ne peuvent \u00eatre produits par le tissu mou du corail que si les \u00e9l\u00e9ments sp\u00e9cifiques n\u00e9cessaires au processus biochimique sont disponibles dans la bonne concentration. Par cons\u00e9quent, des niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s et \u00e9quilibr\u00e9s d&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9ments de base se traduiront par des taux de croissance corallienne acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9s. <br><br>Dans les aquariums r\u00e9cifaux, les coraux ont souvent des populations d&rsquo;algues Zooxanthelles plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es que la normale, ce qui donne une teinte brun fonc\u00e9 qui obscurcit les pigments naturels \u00e9clatants des coraux. La r\u00e9duction des populations de Zooxanthelles par un contr\u00f4le fin des nutriments des algues (comme avec le NO<sub>3<\/sub>:PO<sub>4<\/sub>-X de Red Sea) fait dispara\u00eetre la teinte brun\u00e2tre et induit la production de pigments (chromoprot\u00e9ines), am\u00e9liorant ainsi la coloration des coraux.
